A town of Roman origin, Foligno today is a principal manufacturing and commercial center. Foligno fell victim to the 1997 earthquake. In spite of this and the growth of industry, a stroll through its historic center is always pleasant. It is definitely worth a visit in
September for La Giostra della Quintana (every 2nd and 3rd Sunday), a re-enactment of a medieval equestrian tournament. Ten neighborhoods vie against each other in friendly jousting matches, dressed in elaborate velvet and lace traditional costuming reminiscent of the 15th century. An historic cooking competition provides an opportunity to taste dishes using recipes from the 15th century. It is a festive atmosphere of fairs, parades, outdoor taverns and games.Foligno is a 50-minute drive from El Marsam.
