A DAY TRIP TO FOLIGNO FROM EL MARSAM

A town of Roman origin, Foligno today is a principal manufacturing and commercial center. Foligno fell victim to the 1997 earthquake.   In spite of this and the growth of industry, a stroll through its historic center is always pleasant. It is definitely worth a visit in September for La Giostra della Quintana (every 2^nd and 3^rd Sunday), a re-enactment of a medieval equestrian tournament.  Ten neighborhoods vie against each other in friendly jousting matches, dressed in elaborate velvet and lace traditional costuming reminiscent of the 15^th century.  An historic cooking competition provides an opportunity to taste dishes using recipes from the 15^th century.  It is a festive atmosphere of fairs, parades, outdoor taverns and games.
