Montepulciano is to experience Bella Tuscany and taste
some of the finest wines of the region, renowned as far back as the 8th century. Set atop a narrow ridge of volcanic rock, its cobbled streets are steep, but it is a perfect place to while away a few hours, discovering its intriguing mix of architecture (medieval alleyways, Renaissance churches and palaces) and the delights of its wine cellars; many of them are actually underground tunnels that once connected the palaces and older grottoes carved into the tufa of the mountain. These enoteche offer visitors the chance to sample their famed wines and other local products: pecorino cheese salami, honey, and olive oil. The surrounding vineyards produce a violet-scented, orange-speckled ruby wine called Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.Montepulciano is a 90-minute drive from El Marsam, through some of the most picturesque of Tuscan landscapes.
