Located at the foothills of Monte Subasio, Spello offers delightful walking trails in the town itself and around the countryside, especially when the hills are in flower, in the Spring and in the Autumn. The citizens of Spello put these fragrant flowers to good use during one of its most important festivals, the
Infiorate di Corpus Domini, which falls on Sunday, 60 days after Easter. After weeks of intense preparation by young and old alike, the entire town is carpeted in flower petals, in the most awesome designs, lovingly laid the evening before the procession is to take place. When the festival is not taking place, Spello’s narrow cobblestone streets invite wandering. There are Roman ruins and medieval churches to be explored. Spello’s rare Renaissance masterpiece is the chapel in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, decorated in frescoes by Pinturricchio.
Spello is a 50-minute drive from El Marsam.
