Although associated since 1958 with its famous
Festival of the Two Worlds, Spoleto is an important Umbrian town for many reasons. Claiming a striking hillside position at the foot of the Monteluco, the town has a long history. It was founded in 241 BC. Traces of its ancient past are still visible in the massive 4th century-BC walls and its much-restored Roman theatre, remnants of the important Roman colony it had become, due to its proximity to the Flaminian Way, the major thoroughfare used by people traveling to Rome from the north.Spoleto’s world-famous music festival is held towards the end of June, but it is a city worth visiting any time of year - for its museums, Roman ruins, picturesque streets and lovely vistas, and for a wonderful array of small shops, galleries, and restaurants.
Spoleto is a 90-minute drive from El Marsam.
